Scottish Institute of Reflexology

News

EXTREMELY URGENT

Dear Member,

For the many years the Scottish Institute of Reflexology has been working with other reflexology organisations under the banner of the Reflexology Forum to unite the profession.   We have played an active role in this unification of a previously disparate profession and the development of universally acknowledged standards for the therapy.

The Reflexology Forum has always been committed to adopting the most inclusive and robust regulation possible.   We continue to support this aim.

The work of the Reflexology Forum is now complete in this area and it is with this background that we are very pleased to announce that the time has finally arrived for our members to register with the Federal Regulator.

This is very simple to do electronically by logging on to www.GRCCT.org and following the instruction online.   As a member of the Scottish Institute of Reflexology Registration is £35 per annum + £5 each additional therapy.   Should you know of any non-members who may also wish to register, the cost to them will be £130 to register plus £30 for each additional therapy the Regulator needs to validate.

We are recommending that all our members register immediately.

The purpose of regulation is to protect the public.   A unified and unequivocal mass registration is important both to protect the public, to establish the solidarity of the regulatory process and to protect your credibility and professional reputation as a registered practitioner.

The General Regulatory Council for Complementary Therapies (GRCCT) establishes reflexology as a VOLUNTARY federally registered therapy and satisfies both government and Department of Health criteria.   It also demonstrates your professionalism as an individual along with that of your professional association.

With very best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Fiona Biggar,
President, SIR.

NEW GUIDELINES

New European Resuscitation guidelines will come into effect in August 2006.

For S.I.R. members the key changes in relation to adults include:

• Confirmation of cardiorespiratory arrest
• Chest compressions
• Ventilations

Confirmation of cardiorespiratory arrest

To confirm this you will look, listen and feel for signs of breathing for up to 10 seconds to determine the absence of normal breathing.

Chest compressions

You will be required to use a ratio of 30 compressions to 2 ventilations.  CPR will begin with chest compressions as the initial 2 ventilations are no longer recommended except in a minority of situations eg. near drowning.

Ventilations

An inspiratory time of 1 second is sufficient to achieve chest rise similar to normal breathing.  If there is a clinical reason to avoid mouth – to – mouth resuscitation, provide chest compressions only until further help arrives

Do not panic as the advice given to us by the St Andrew’s Ambulance Association is that you must continue doing what you were taught at you last training as these guidelines are neither unsafe nor ineffective.   It is only after you have been taught the new guidelines (may take another 2-3 years) that you will be expected to change your practice.

The SIR Committee have taken the decison to adopt the font Comic Sans 12 for all our official stationary as we have been advised that this may help people with dyslexia.
