Scottish Institute of Reflexology

What is RiEN?

“RiEN – Reflexology in Europe Network, is a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and experience between its member organisations in Europe.

The activities consist of:
• Convening a regular European Conference of Reflexology.
• Seeking to influence the European Commission on behalf of Reflexology.
• Support emerging and existing Reflexology organisations with advice and guidance.
• Stimulate scientific research in Reflexology.
• When appropriate, to investigate setting guidelines for professional education in Reflexology.”

The SIR is a member of RiEN with Andrew Manson as the RiEN representative. He will receive the RiEN newsletter and report to the SIR committee and members on developments of Reflexology in Europe.

RiEN began in the 1990’s as pressure was mounting against complementary therapies and it was felt necessary by Reflexologists in Europe to join together as ‘one voice’ to protect their future and promote their work. The first European Conference of Reflexology was organised in Newcastle, UK, in 1994 and continues now as a biennial event. RiEN now represents over 20000 members in 20 countries across Europe.

RiEN continues to influence the European Commission, particularly :-
• Members of the European Parliament representing the taskforce of public health.
• The Working Group on Complementary & Natural Medicine, part of the Health Inter Group.
• The European Forum for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (EFCAM), part of the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA).

There are several Working Groups within RiEN :-
• RRG – RiEN Research Group
• RBG – RiEN Brussels Group
• RSN – RiEN Schools Network
• REG – RiEN Education Group
