VRT - three-minute magic
By Verity Owen
The reflex action you won't take lying down
I felt decidedly anxious as I entered Barbara Stanhope-Williamson's consulting room - if only because my feet were reflected several times over in its mirrored walls. I am in relatively good health, but I do have a right shoulder that seizes up from time to time. Barbara promised to see what she could do.
As I stood upright, with my feet slightly apart, the Vertical Reflex Therapy began. It consisted of soft, sweeping movements over my feet and ankles, which felt soothing and a little ticklish. However, when some reflex points were pressed I felt a sharp burst of pain, particularly in my right shoulder. Barbara also held the corresponding hand reflex points to maximise the beneficial effects of the treatment. The whole process took about three minutes.
Then I lay back in a chair while Barbara worked her way down the length and breadth of my feet. They were quite sensitive after the VRT - my shoulder felt as if it had tiny pebbles under the skin - but I felt incredibly relaxed.
The session lasted about an hour, at the end of which I was calm and sleepy. I didn't notice any immediate difference in the state of my shoulder - and I shall just have to see how much of the promised boost my immune system has been given. I have, however, been sleeping like the dead ever since.
